Over the past few months Jason’s Deli has been making some major changes.  In October 2008 they announced that they had eliminated all High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), Trans Fats and MSG from the food the serve.  From their breads to their desserts . . . and yes this does include their signature soft serve ice cream . . .the FAKE stuff is gone!  The only thing left on the menu with HFCS is their sodas but they are considering removing that obstacle as well.  They are asking people to voice their opinion on the matter by voting for or against replacing their current soda offering with soda made without the fake stuff.  You’ll find a link to this poll at the bottom of this post.

By elimitaing these evil additives guess what they found?  The food TASTES BETTER!  Jason’s Deli owner and Executive Vice President, Rusty Coco said “Even though this was an enormous undertaking as high fructose corn syrup is pervasive in the food system, we found that removing HFCS actually makes the food taste better” said Coco.

If you’ve ever read the ingredients labels at the grocery store you know that finding food without HFCS is a huge challenge so you can only imagine the time, effort and investment it took for a massive restaurant chain like Jason’s Deli to remove the stuff.  Unless you’re lucky enough to have a Whole Foods or similar grocery in your area it’s nearly impossible to find a loaf of bread without HFCS.  And good luck finding a condiment or frozen food that’s not laced with the stuff . . . not to mention the other nasty additives lurking in there along side.

This is the first restaurant chain in the U.S. to make such a bold move and Coco has challenged the entire restaurant industry to follow in their footsteps.  BRAVO Mr. Coco and thank you for creating an menu full of REAL food!

Now get out of my way, I’m hungry!
